Although City struggled on the pitch in 1997/1998, the year was notable for the attempts to modernise the club. City ended their 63-year partnership with Umbro to bring Kappa in as their new kit manufacturer, darkened the shade of blue in their shirt to “laser blue” and changed their badge to the now recognisable shield and golden eagle design that was used between 1997 and 2016. This kit was the first to feature all three changes.
